Oakland A's: Cespedes out of lineup but no DL for now - San Jose Mercury News

DENVER â€" Yoenis Cespedes is out of the A's lineup Thursday, as expected, after aggravating his left hamstring strain Wednesday night.

Manager Bob Melvin reiterated that Cespedes will be re-evaluated when the A's return to Oakland and that the outfielder could see time as designated hitter on the upcoming homestand to keep some stress off the hamstring.

The A's get their use of the D.H. back starting Friday, but there is no indication from the A's that Manny Ramirez will be promoted from Triple-A Sacramento.

Right-hander Brandon McCarthy will play catch today but he remains doubtful for Saturday's start against San Diego. However, Melvin said he is encouraged that McCarthy, suffering from shoulder soreness, will not have to join the D.L.

Tyson Ross has been scratched from Thursday night's start for Sacramento, according to a source, with Travis Banwart taking his place. That suggests that the A's plan to promote Ross and have him start Saturday. The team hasn't announced any plans if McCarthy can't pitch that game.
