The Tigers fell three games behind Chicago in the AL Central after dropping a 5-4 decision at U.S. Cellular Field on Monday. A division title may be Detroit's best bet for a playoff berth as it trails Baltimore by 5 1/2 games for the second wild-card spot with two other teams between them. The Tigers' schedule seems favorable the rest of the way. After this series, they'll play six games with AL-worst Minnesota and face Kansas City seven times. A.J. Griffin has been a major reason A's starting pitchers rank second in the AL with a 3.69 ERA, and the rookie will look to stay hot Tuesday. Griffin (6-0, 1.94 ERA) won his third straight start after tossing eight scoreless innings in Wednesday's 4-1 victory over the Angels. Griffin has been fantastic on the road, going 4-0 with a 1.15 ERA and 31 strikeouts in 31 1/3 innings over five starts. The A's offense, though, likely will get a tough test from major league strikeout leader Max Scherzer, who is 6-0 with a 1.29 ERA over his last seven starts. Scherzer (16-6, 3.77), who has struck out 60 in 49 innings during that stretch, gave up one run and fanned seven in six innings of Wednesday's 8-6 win over the White Sox. Pitching in crucial games only seems to motivate him more. "I love being in this situation," said Scherzer, who has 220 strikeouts. "I want to have all the marbles on the line in a pennant race, where these games mean everything. I love having the ball in this situation."

Free Pick: I will look to the Under in this one. Both of these pitchers are hot right now and should how down a couple of solid offenses in this one. AJ Griffin has been special for Oakland thus far as he is 6-0 with a 1.94 ERA overall. On the road he has a 1.15 ERA, while in his last 3 overall that ERA is just 0.89, while his WHIP is 0.79 over the same stretch. Griffin has allowed 2 ER's or less in 9 of his 11 starts and will be taking on a Detroit offense that is averaging just 3.8 rpg in this last 10 games. Granted those games were on the road, but this offense doesn't seem right at the moment. Max Scherzer has been dynamite of late, allowing 2 ER's or less in his last 7 starts, while posting a 1.28 ERA over that stretch. His WHIP in his last 3 starts is a skinny 0.64. Max has faced Oakland once this year and allowed just 2 ER's in 6.1 Innings. He should be able to contain this Oakland offense that comes in hitting just .227 and scoring 3.4 rpg in their last 5 games. The Pens come in struggling, but not sure we'll see much of them as these two starters dominate a couple of struggling offenses.

-$25 of picks FREE! No Obligation - No Credit Card Required - Becoming a member is Fast and Free!

*Fantasy Football is back - Enter Pregame's $1,000 tournament for FREE! Against Stanford, however, the Trojans found out how much another loss could hurt when center Khaled Holmes was forced to miss the game after suffering an injury the previous week against Syracuse.
With Holmes out of the lineup, the Trojans turned to redshirt freshman Cyrus Hobbi, a player with a bright future who had seen limited reps in early-season action. As it turned out, the matchup was a tough one for Hobbi. The Cardinal played aggressive defense with a solid group that came into the game ranked among the nation's leaders against the run. The constant defensive pressure helped lead to several missed assignments on the line. USC head coach Lane Kiffin said it was the most missed assignments for a line he had ever seen.

"We're moving on," USC offensive line coach James Cregg said. "We covered our mistakes in meetings after the game and we know what went wrong. As far as Cyrus is concerned, it was a first game experience in a tough environment. We expect him to be better next time."

This is not to lay the blame solely on Hobbi. Yes, he was overwhelmed, but that was a daunting challenge for any player against that particular 3-4 defensive scheme. Hobbi's teammates, including Holmes, have been quick to come to his defense. It's unclear at this point if Holmes will be returning for the upcoming game against Cal, so it's possible that Hobbi will be in the lineup again. The Trojans also might turn to fifth-year senior Abe Markowitz.

Markowitz is a former walk-on who earned a scholarship by being a valuable reserve at both center and guard. He was inactive last week during practice, according to Kiffin, but was available to play in the game. The decision was made to go with Hobbi against Stanford, but if Markowitz hears his number called on Saturday, he will be ready.

"I just want to get on the field," Markowitz said. "It's been a dream of mine since I've been here to get out there and start. I'm healthy and ready for my opportunity if it happens.

"I've been playing guard for a while, so I'm staying after practice this week to work on some snaps. Playing center is a lot more fun than guard, you just get to beat people up."

Cregg is also confident that Markowitz will be ready if called upon.

"Abe has a lot of experience in our system," Cregg said. "He's a stout guy with good leg strength, a solid run blocker."

There also will be an open competition this week in practice for the starting left tackle spot between incumbent Aundrey Walker and true freshman Max Tuerk. Walker was named the left tackle in spring ball after an abbreviated competition with Kevin Graf, but he found out last Saturday that replacing Kalil is not an easy task. Walker struggled, and Kiffin wasted no time in making it clear he wasn't pleased with the effort and was putting the job up for grabs.

More from We Are SC

Everything USC, from recruiting to news to game coverage, is available in ESPN.com's WeAreSC.
More:
â¢Â ESPN Los Angeles' USC blog
â¢Â ESPN.com Recruiting coverage
â¢Â ESPN.com's Pac-12 blog

"Guys are going to make mistakes," Kiffin said. "We can tolerate dropping a ball or getting beat, but what we won't tolerate is a lack of great effort -- not when you put on these jerseys that all of these great players have worn before you. I think Aundrey is going to respond well to this."
For his part, Walker is saying all the right things about getting the message and responding the right way.

"There's nothing else to it but working hard this week and getting better," Walker said. "Just watch on Saturday night. That's all I have to say: Watch on Saturday night."

The Trojans line is sure to be tested by another physical defensive line that might not be as powerful as Stanford's but is one that can present some problems nonetheless. The Bears also mix in different fronts as they look to create space for their linebackers. How the USC offensive line will be able to regroup and respond to this challenge will go a long way toward determining the outcome of the game.

Garry Paskwietz | email
Publisher, WeAreSC.com

Founder of WeAreSC.com

Covers USC Trojans sports and recruiting

Has covered USC since 1997

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4855939387606381137.post-69979289904516064632012-09-19T04:33:00.001-07:002012-09-19T04:33:04.101-07:00Will the LA Dodgers Go on Another Spending Spree If They Miss the Playoffs? - Bleacher Report

Despite making blockbuster deals that brought Hanley Ramirez, Adrian Gonzalez and Josh Beckett to Los Angeles, the Dodgers are struggling to close the gap on both the Wild Card and pennant races, which has increasingly put their playoff hopes into doubt.

While the Blue Crew still has the opportunity to make its first postseason journey since losing to the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLCS in 2009, time is ticking away as the Dodgers' offensive woes continue to weigh down the team from their true potential.

After an eventful season of transactions this year that brought big-name players and their big-name contracts to the City of Angels, we begin to wonder how the Dodgersâ new spendthrift ownership, Guggenheim Baseball Management, will respond to an unsuccessful conclusion to the 2012 season.

Will the new owners go on another massive spending spree if the Dodgersâ recent shortcomings cause them to disappointingly miss this yearâs playoffs?

Judging from their recent actions, which stunned many, it seems as though the new ownership will throw cash in any direction to ensure that this team succeeds, an effort that is greatly appreciated by fans.

However, after the shock-and-awe of the Dodgersâ monster deal with the Red Sox to bring Gonzalez, Beckett and Carl Crawford to the team has worn off, the management may have learned a valuable lesson: Money canât buy you championships. Not in baseball, at least.

On top of that, the owners understand that it takes time for players to acclimate to their new surroundings. All of the new acquisitions, despite their spotty achievements, have struggled since putting on a Dodgers uniform.

Stephen Dunn/Getty Images

So, while the new owners would love to create more excitement in L.A. and give the Dodgers an increased chance of succeeding, they also realize that adding superstars can only do so much for a team, and can also backfire in the clubhouse.

Furthermore, as much as they would like to support the franchise and its future, there is a finite amount of funds that they can use for playersâ salaries. They incurred $262.5 million in future salaries in the Red Sox blockbuster deal, which is no expendable amount.

Other key factors that the new ownership will take into account before embarking upon another expensive endeavor are the underlying reasons why the team has not succeeded this season despite a face lift to its roster.

In addition to the struggles of the newcomers, the Dodgers have also been marred by key injuries.

Major utility man Jerry Hairston Jr. is out for the season. Ted Lilly has been sidelined since May. Clayton Kershaw has been dealing with lower-body injuries all season. Chad Billingsley was on the disabled list and is now on out for the season after an impressive return for the DL.

Closer Kenley Jansen is having cardiac issues, and most importantly, Matt Kemp was sidelined with a hamstring injury and has recently been struggling since crashing into a wall at full speed in Colorado.

Injuries occur to every team, but so many injuries to key players have really affected the team this season, especially in the second half of the season.

Lastly, the team has the potential to be a much more cohesive unit after a proper spring training together, which can help set the mold on this group of players.

Do you think the Dodgers will go on another spending spree if they miss the playoffs?

Do you think the Dodgers will go on another spending spree if they miss the playoffs?

Yes

No

Total votes: 1

In all, the overwhelming signs that indicate that the new ownership should be patient before pulling the trigger on a big deal once again.

Itâs simply too risky financially and may prove to be a dud or counterproductive like the recent acquisitions have proved to be so far.

Chances are that the Dodgers will still make a deal for a pitcher or two in the offseason, but they need not get too desperate.

There are only so many moves that a front office can make.

After all, the game is played on the field.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4855939387606381137.post-6569456999168312752012-09-19T03:33:00.001-07:002012-09-19T03:33:04.161-07:00AEG, owner of LA's Kings, Staples arena, - FOXSports.com

Updated Sep 19, 2012 5:19 AM ET

LOS ANGELES (AP)

A for-sale sign for the owner of the Staples Center arena, the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, Major League Soccer's LA Galaxy and a stake in the LA Lakers would be a major shock to the city's sports, entertainment and business establishment at any time.

But when Denver-based Anschutz Co. said Tuesday that it was ''commencing a process'' to sell subsidiary Anschutz Entertainment Group, the announcement left especially big questions about AEG's central role in courting the NFL's return to Los Angeles with Farmers Field, a planned downtown stadium going through late-round approvals with the city.

Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa was not so shocked, saying he had long known about the possible sale even as he publicly pushed for the building of the stadium. He insisted it would not derail the city as it pulls closer to the return of the NFL since the 1994 departure of the Rams and Raiders.

Villaraigosa said both Denver billionaire Phillip Anschutz and AEG President Tim Leiweke have assured him the city's football future will remain the same.

''I have worked with both Phil Anschutz and Tim Leiweke for years to bring a football team to Los Angeles. I speak to both of them on a regular basis, and I have known about this potential sale for some time,'' the mayor said in a statement Tuesday. ''I have the commitment from both of them that this won't affect plans for an NFL team to return to Los Angeles in the near future and so will not affect my support for moving ahead with Farmers Field.''

The stadium overcame a major hurdle last week when the city's planning commission unanimously recommended that the city council approve its environmental impact report. The council will take up the issue on Sept. 28.

If an agreement is reached, AEG and the city have said they would work on the puzzle's most important piece - convincing an NFL team to move - early next year.

Councilwoman Jan Perry, whose district includes the proposed stadium site next to the Staples Center, said she did not know about a pending sale but agreed that it wouldn't have adverse effects on courting a team.

''The city has done a good job of protecting the taxpayer's interest in negotiating an agreement,'' Perry told The Associated Press, ''so whoever steps into the shoes of Mr. Anschutz will have the same obligations.''

Perry said the move ''arguably is very positive'' because she suspected it could lead to an enthusiastic new partner anxious to get in on the city's NFL prospects.

It wasn't immediately clear how far along the company is in the sale process, or whether it has entertained any offers. The price for AEG could be well into the billions.

Anschutz Co. said in the statement that it has hired as financial advisers the Blackstone Group, which recently managed the sale of the Los Angeles Dodgers to a group that includes former Lakers star Magic Johnson.

''Given the success of the management team and employees in establishing AEG as one of the premier real estate development, live sports and entertainment platforms in the world,'' Anschutz president Cannon Y. Harvey said in a statement, ''this is an appropriate time to transition AEG to a new qualified owner. This process represents a unique opportunity to maximize value for all concerned.''

AEG's holdings also include the professional soccer team Los Angeles Galaxy, part-ownership of the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers, and major entertainment and real estate holdings in downtown Los Angeles. It also owns arenas in Sweden, China and Australia.

The potential sale was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

AEG transformed the city's landscape with the building of Staples Center and the addition of the LA Live entertainment complex, helping to revitalize a long-neglected downtown and bring energy and several championships to its sports teams.

Opened in 1999, the Staples Center is among the world's busiest arenas. Sports

The Los Angeles Galaxy's Marcelo Sarvas is turning out to be a great addition to the team. In addition, to assisting both goals in the Galaxy's 2-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids, Sarvas made an incredible block on Conor Casey's shot. The save prevented the Rapids from getting back into the game. In addition, it was nominated for the MLS Save of the Week for Week 28.

Sarvas' Path to the 'Starting XI'

At the beginning of the season, Sarvas spent some time on the bench and playing for the Galaxy's Reserve team. It wasn't until July that Sarvas was consistently in the starting lineup. When the Brazilian midfielder played at least 60 minutes, the Galaxy were 10-5-2. When he played 16 minutes or less, the Galaxy's record was 4-6-2.

Sarvas' Breakout Game

The Galaxy-Rapids game on September 14 was Sarvas' breakout game. Without David Beckham in the starting lineup, the 30-year-old paired in the midfield with countryman Juninho. In the 15th minute, Sarvas gave the pass to Donovan who fed to ball to Robbie Keane. The Irish striker scored to make it 1-0. In the 58th minute, Sarvas provided the long ball that led to Christian Wilhelmsson's goal. Sarvas' save was the icing on the cake and made him the "man of the match." He was also named to the MLS Team of the Week for Week 28.

The Save

In the 78th minute, Omar Gonzalez was unable to clear a ball that came into the box. Conor Casey got around our goalkeeper Josh Saunders and took a shot. Fortunately for our side, Sarvas slid into the box and blocked the shot. There's nothing better than when a player steps in for the goalie and prevents a goal. That is true defending.

The Competition

Along with Sarvas, Sean Johnson (Chicago Fire) is nominated for his diving save against Eric Avila's (Toronto FC) corner blast. Then, there was Tally Hall's (Houston Dynamo) "Matrix-like" save on C.J. Sapong's header. Although he stumbled and was behind a lot of bodies, Andy Gruenebaum (Columbus Crew) still tipped Thierry Henry's chip over the crossbar. Matt Reis (New England Revolution) made a one-handed save against Branko BoÅ¡koviÄ's long range shot.

As of Sept. 18, Sarvas has over 50 percent of the vote. I imagine he will take the honor.

Melissa Matters is a long time Los Angeles resident and devoted Los Angeles Galaxy fan.

More from Melissa:
Four L.A. The Trojans (2-1, 0-1 Pac-12) strenuously avoided buying into the hype around their comeback season from a two-year postseason ban, yet they returned to practice determined to prove they're still better than the struggling team that lost to Stanford yet again and plummeted 11 spots in the rankings.

Barkley was crushed after the game, his senior season getting off to a start he never expected. Yet Barkley's determination to grow as a leader forced him to find a mature perspective on the loss: It's only September, after all, and the Trojans' dreams of major postseason success are very much alive.

Still, it stings, even three days later.

"The shock behind that, I wasn't expecting to happen," Barkley said. "I learned a lot from a defeat like that. You learn to come back the next day and to be the voice that we need. You've got to make sure it's a quick turnaround."

And Barkley realizes the spotlight will be directed squarely at his offense, which improbably was shut out in the second half.

USC's stars produced thoroughly pedestrian numbers, and the offensive line deserves much of the blame after looking overmatched against the Cardinal. Barkley went 20 for 41 with two interceptions, while Marqise Lee had eight catches for 100 yards, but didn't score. Silas Redd scored two touchdowns with just 17 yards rushing, and Curtis McNeal ran for only 37 yards.

"We're a little bit in shock," said All-American receiver Robert Woods, who had just four catches for 38 yards against Stanford. "But our defense played well. We've just got to produce on offense. That's our job. Our team spirits are still high. We know we can bounce back and play well."

The Trojans must patch their struggling offensive line in time to face California at the Coliseum on Saturday, so coach Lane Kiffin has re-opened competition for Aundrey Walker's starting job at left tackle.

Kiffin had strong words for Barkley after the game, saying the senior had made some bad decisions, but reserved his strongest criticism for the line that was missing injured Khaled Holmes, its senior center and leader.

"We're looking for finish," Kiffin said. "Guys are going to get beat. Guys are going to drop balls. You're going to make mistakes, but we won't tolerate lack of great effort, not when you put on these jerseys that all these great players have worn before. I think Aundrey is going to respond well to this."

Walker is the sophomore who replaced Matt Kalil, the fourth overall pick by Minnesota in last spring's draft. The 6-foot-6, 300-pounder from Cleveland is learning on the job, but feels he'll outperform Max Tuerk in practice this week to keep his position.

"I've just got to work hard and get better, too," Walker said. "It's nothing but motivation to get better. ... Khaled is a smart guy. He's a leader on the team, and we're looking forward to having him come back."

Barkley claimed the Cardinal's rush "didn't get to me," but it certainly appeared to succeed during the game. Barkley was sacked four times and hurried several more times, forcing throws into coverage for interceptions.

"A million times he's made the right decision there," Kiffin said. "That's going to happen to anybody when you start getting rushed and you're not getting protected the way you need to."

Kiffin is watching his Trojans for signs of a hangover, claiming he saw none Tuesday morning. USC has a bye after hosting the Golden Bears, so there's no reason to hold back anything in what's got to be a bounce-back game for a team that still harbors national title hopes after an early-season humbling.

"Just watch Saturday," Walker said. "That's all I've got to say."

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4855939387606381137.post-11820738831455521052012-09-18T21:33:00.001-07:002012-09-18T21:33:04.967-07:00AEG, Owner of LA's Kings, Staples Arena, for Sale - ABC News

Anschutz Entertainment Group, the owner of the Staples Center arena and the NHL's Los Angeles Kings, and the top contender to build a stadium and bring the NFL back to Los Angeles, is up for sale, its parent company said Tuesday.

The Denver-based Anschutz Co. said in a statement that it is "commencing a process" to sell the subsidiary known as AEG and had hired Blackstone Advisory Partners as an adviser.

It wasn't immediately clear how far along the company is in the sale process, or whether it has entertained any offers, but the price for AEG could be well into the billions.

The sale would mean a major ground shift in sports and entertainment in Los Angeles and around the world.

AEG's holdings also include pro soccer's Los Angeles Galaxy, part-ownership of the NBA's Los Angeles Lakers, and major entertainment and real estate holdings in downtown Los Angeles. Puerto Rico Islanders Preview: Galaxy Look to Wrap Up ... - Yahoo! Sports

The Los Angeles Galaxy will be on the road to play the Puerto Rico Islanders on Sept. 19 in a Group 5 CONCACAF Champions League (CCL) match. The match will be televised on Fox Soccer. The Galaxy currently lead the group at 2-0-0 with an eight-goal differential separating them from second-place Isidro Metapan. The Galaxy will finish CCL group play against Metapan on Oct. 25.

Series Information

The Galaxy defeated the Islanders, 4-0, in the last CCL Group 5 meeting on Aug. 29 at the Home Depot Center. However, in the 2010 edition of the CCL the Islanders defeated the Galaxy, 5-3, on aggregate in the preliminary round. Overall, the Galaxy are 2-1-0 against the Islanders, including a stunning 4-1 defeat at the Home Depot Center in 2010.

Galaxy Leaders

The Galaxy are planning to use roughly the same lineup of reserve players which were able to dominate Puerto Rico in the last meeting. Jose Villarreal, Jack McBean, Michael Stephens and Tommy Meyer all scored for L.A. in August against the Islanders. While Galaxy fans should expect to see plenty of young players on the pitch, I would not be surprised to see veteran winger and new signing Christian Wilhelmsson get a start. Wilhelmsson made an immediate impact in his first MLS match as a Galaxy player on Sept. 14 when he scored an insurance goal against the Rapids in a 2-0 win.

Islanders Leaders

Although he could not find the back of the net in August, Nicholas Addlery remains the top scoring threat for the Islanders. Addlery has nine goals in NASL play this season, which is fifth in the league. Jonathan Fana leads the Islanders in assists with five in NASL play. Richard Martin has been stellar in league play in net for the Islanders but hasn't gotten much help from his defense in CCL play.

The Galaxy will all but be assured of moving on to the quarterfinals of the tournament with a win against the Islanders. The Islanders will undoubtedly give the Galaxy everything they have in the match, but I can't see their motivation to upset our side being worth more than a draw.

More from Patrick Johnston:

LA Galaxy defeat Colorado Rapids, 2-0

David Beckham, Juninho lead LA Galaxy to 2-0 win over Whitecaps
LA Galaxy defeat Puerto Rico Islanders, 4-0
Sources:

Stats from MLS Soccer.com and NASL.com

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4855939387606381137.post-70406918924327842462012-09-18T16:33:00.001-07:002012-09-18T16:33:04.721-07:00Oakland Raiders: Is the Season Over Before it Even Began? - The Raider Nation Times

Oakland Raiders: Is the Season Over Before it Even Began?

Eliott Howes â" Sep 18, 2012

The Oakland Raiders are in a position many wouldnât have expected them to be in during the off-season. The loss against San Diego was painful enough, but to lose 35-13 against the previously misfiring Miami Dolphins is very worrying! The scoreline isnât the worst thing about the loss; itâs the way we played which is the main concern.

Leading 10-7 at half time, things looked promising but the 2nd half was the worst performance I have seen in several years from the Oakland Raiders. We lost the half 28-3. A misfiring Quarterback, a running back and offensive line who cannot adapt to the zone-blocking offense, a defensive line which cannot penetrate as well as a secondary which fails to read plays and make basic tackles. Now it doesnât take an expert to realize that this is a recipe for disaster in the NFL!

Before the season started I predicted the Raiders to go 7-9 and that was being optimistic. I also said that the Titans, Browns and Dolphins would be the worst teams in the NFL in 2012 and I still believe so, but unfortunately the Raiders have joined them. I am a diehard Raider and I will scream as loud as I always have if we went 0-16, but even though this wonât be the case, I am very concerned.

We are the Oakland Raiders, a team for over 40 years which has brought fear and destruction to opponents. Today the Oakland Raiders are no longer feared, no longer dangerous, and many Raiders no longer show that burning passion which took Raider legends to the Pro Football Hall Of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

Now back to my article title... âIs the season over before it already began?â I am not sure what is going on in the backroom of the organization but for me Reggie McKenzie seems reluctant to bring in any talent on either side of the ball, despite injuries to key players. I have heard it from my twitter followers and it is also on my mind, that it seems like we are already looking towards next year, and if so, that is very sad!

I would take a repeat of last season right now. Ok, we didnât make the playoffs and threw away that chance when it looked an almost certainty but the football we played was entertaining to watch. Fake punts, play action, flea flickers and reverses were iconic last year but this year the play calling is completely different. I cannot understand it and itâs something that has made me feel angry when writing this that we are calling plays on 3rd and long, and wide receivers are running routes no deeper than 5 yards. Just go for it Greg Knapp! I am not his biggest fan but I enjoyed watching his offense in the past but whether itâs suited to the current personnel in Oakland, Iâm not too sure!

Sunday sees the Raiders take on the Pittsburgh Steelers, a game which is rich with history. The Oakland Raiders are built to be a running team and if we can get Darren McFadden going we have a chance. Until we do that, there isnât much we can do to stop teams from beating us but only time will tell.

This year looks to be a test of the patience of the Raidernation but as we are the most loyal fans in the NFL, we will be watching every Sunday to support the Silver and Black. Only 12% of teams who start 0-2 make the playoffs but who knows, anything can happen in Oakland!

Let me hear your opinions on what is needed to turn the season around by following me on twitter @WorldNFL

Related Articles

Oakland Raiders Training Camp: News and Notes from Day 10

Oakland Raiders Training Camp: News and Notes from Day 11

Oakland Raiders Training Camp: News and Notes from Day 15

Oakland Raiders Training Camp: News and Notes from Day 17

Oakland Raiders: Practice News and Notes from Tuesday August 28

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4855939387606381137.post-33988245025069589712012-09-18T14:33:00.001-07:002012-09-18T14:33:04.594-07:00Steve Sabol's "Autumn Wind" poem a lasting tribute to Oakland Raiders - San Jose Mercury News

NFL Films president Steve Sabol, who passed away at age 69 on Tuesday, played a big role in the glorification of the Oakland Raiders' tough-guy image.

It was Sabol who penned a poem for NFL Films in 1974 titled, "The Autumn Wind," which was set to music and is still considered the Raiders' unofficial theme song.

Late Raiders owner Al Davis is said to have loved Sabol's production, reportedly saying "it epitomized everything that the Raiders stood for."

The following is the text of Sabol's "The Autumn Wind."

The Autumn wind is a pirate

Blustering in from sea

With a rollicking song he sweeps along

Swaggering boisterously.

His face is weather-beaten

He wears a hooded sash

With a silver hat about his head

And a bristling black mustache

He growls as he storms the country

A villain big and bold

And the trees all shake and quiver and quake

As he robs them of their gold.

The Autumn wind is a Raider

Pillaging just for fun

He'll knock you 'round and upside down

And laugh when he's conquered and won.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4855939387606381137.post-23792526096577799572012-09-18T13:33:00.001-07:002012-09-18T13:33:05.486-07:00Breaking Down Which L.A. Lakers Newcomer Kobe Bryant Will Thrive with - Bleacher Report

Kobe Bryant is the center of the Lakers' universe. He's not only their marquee player off the court but also the man whose game has been featured within the context of the offense they run on it.

However, any observer also knows that the Lakers' success hasn't been built on Kobe's back alone. He's been blessed with some fantastic teammates over the years, and one of the main reasons he has five championships to his name is because of his ability to mesh his game with theirs in order to maximize results.

Heading into the 2012-13 season, Kobe has a new duo of superstar teammates to play with. Steve Nash and Dwight Howard offer an array of skills and individual talents that Kobe can play off of. One of the key variables to achieving their ultimate goal will certainly be how well these players blend together.

Playing with a point guard the caliber of Steve Nash will be a new experience for Kobe. Throughout his career, Kobe has rarely had to cede his role of primary perimeter creator, but with Nash he likely will. This, however, shouldn't be an issue for Kobe. In fact, it can actually help him be even more effective.

First off all, Nash is the type of pass first point guard that is sure to look to get Kobe better shots than the ones he's gotten in recent seasons. Nash is a master at manipulating defenses; he's a floor general that moves defenders like chess pieces in order to generate good looks for his teammates.

As you can see in the clip above, Nash broke down the entire defense, drew multiple defenders and then picked out the open man for a wide open shot. If you look closer, you'll see that Channing Frye wasn't the only open man, either. In the right corner, Jared Dudley was spotting up wide open as well. Can you imagine Kobe getting those types of wide-open looks?

But Nash's ability to make sweet passes isn't the only way he'll help Kobe's game. Besides being a top assist man, Nash is also one of the league's best shooters. His ability to space the floor will give Kobe cleaner looks at the basket simply because he's dealing with fewer help defenders willing to leave their man. Imagine Steve Nash replacing Ramon Sessions in the picture below. Do you think Russell Westbrook cheats over as far to deny Kobe's drive to the middle of the floor?

The Lakers can also run countless two-man game options between Kobe and Nash in order to get Kobe good shots. Last season a staple of the Lakers' offense was a 1/2 pick and roll where Kobe would set a screen for the point guard. This action was designed to force a switch and get Kobe isolated on a smaller defender. The play didn't work as often as the team would have liked because the point guard could rarely threaten the defense off the dribble to force a switch. With Nash replacing last season's PGs, that will no longer be the case.

Nash, though, is only one part of the equation. Kobe will also have a field day playing next to Dwight Howard. Throughout his career, Kobe's developed great chemistry with every high-caliber big man he's been paired with, and I expect the same to be true of Dwight.

First of all, Dwight Howard is a monster in the pick-and-roll game. His ability to dive down the lane, make the catch, and finish at the rim with power is unparalleled in the league:

Plays like these will not only get Kobe easy assist opportunities, but they'll also put the defense in a difficult position every time the action is run. With Kobe coming off the pick and Howard drawing the attention of multiple defenders, Kobe will only have more space to operate with the ball in his hands. This will allow Kobe to get his jumper off with less pressure and open up angles that allow him to drive to the rim.

Second, Dwight Howard is a fantastic screener, both on and off the ball. His wide shoulders allow him to pick his target consistently and open up his teammates to move freely around the floor. Kobe is one of the best off-the-ball movers in the NBA, but even with his ability it's difficult to shake free without the help of a teammate setting a good screen. Howard, more so than Bynum has done for Kobe over the years, will set solid screens that open him up to make clean catches that give him that extra half second to get a good shot off.

Kobe can also benefit from parts of Dwight's game that are clearly flawed. A main criticism of Howard is that he's a poor free throw shooter. This really can't be argued. However, what people rarely mention is that because Howard shoots FTs so poorly, he's fouled at an incredibly high rate.

In the 2011-12 season Howard drew a league leading 8.5 fouls a game, or essentially a shade over two fouls per quarter. Considering teams shoot bonus FTs on the fifth team foul, the Lakers (much like when Shaq was on the team) are set to be one of the league leaders in FTs attempted. This past season, Kobe shot 7.8 foul shots a game (fourth in the NBA) and that was without Howard on the team. With Dwight in the fold it's conceivable that Kobe can take even more FTs a game next season. Those will be easy points for a career 84 percent foul shooter.

Who Kobe better meshes with next season will be up for debate. Both Nash and Howard give Kobe dynamic skill sets that he can use to compliment his own game. That said, the bigger take away isn't who will be better for Kobe but that both players should be able to give a nice boost to Kobe's performance.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4855939387606381137.post-26215853854970817872012-09-18T12:33:00.001-07:002012-09-18T12:33:05.196-07:00It's only September: USC Trojans still shocked by Stanford loss, but chasing ... - Washington Post
', '
'] return ret.join(''); } function setCarouselContents(){ var paramUser = getParamUser(); var recipe = "3"; //s.getCookieForRecVidABTest(); var paramABTestBucket = getParamABTestBucket(recipe); var baseurl = "http://md1.washingtonpost.com";//"http://md1.washingtonpost.com" //The current url var paramCurrentUrl = "&url=" + encodeURI(TWP.Data.NN.canonicalURL);//we have confirmation this is preferred over 'href' //test url - we need this especially for recipe 4. "We're obviously not where we want to be as a football team. We have to continue to work to get better, and that's exactly what we're going to do."

The Raiders followed up a 22-14 season-opening loss at home to San Diego, when they were done in by three botched punts following an injury to long snapper Jon Condo, with a disheartening 35-13 loss at Miami.

Reggie Bush ran for 172 of Miami's 263 yards rushing and scored two of the Dolphins' four touchdowns on the ground. Rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill went 18 for 30 for 200 yards and one touchdown in a turnover-free performance.

Oakland's offense wasn't much better, with the only touchdown coming on a 64-yard swing pass to backup running back Mike Goodson. Carson Palmer completed just 50 percent of his passes and McFadden was held to 22 yards on 11 carries. For the second straight week, the Raiders were held to negative yards rushing in the second half.

About the only positive to come out of the first two weeks is the Raiders have reduced their record-setting penalty rate of a year ago, committing just 11 so far this season after averaging more than 10 a game last year.

That led Allen to change plans on Monday and have the entire team get together to watch the film instead of breaking up into offense and defense.

"It's not a fun meeting," center Stefen Wisniewski said. "You don't want to have too many meetings like that, with the whole team sitting, watching, watching an ugly film. But, you got to do that, in order to get better."

Allen said he has seen that tactic done before and he believes it helps build cohesiveness with the team. The handful of players available in the locker room Monday said it was a new experience for them.

"Any player across the league would say it was a little awkward at first. Just because you're not used to doing that instead of just watching it with your defense," said cornerback Joselio Hanson, who has been in the league since 2004. "It was actually good teaching because we were looking at the offensive guys and what the other team's defense was trying to do to them, and we heard our offensive coordinator telling our offense certain techniques that he wants to work against the defense, and how they want to beat us. It was good to hear that."

The biggest immediate issues for the Raiders to address before playing Pittsburgh at home on Sunday are getting the running game going and figuring out who will play cornerback. Injuries will play a factor in both.

Starting cornerback Shawntae Spencer left Sunday's game in the fourth quarter with a sprained right foot and is expected to miss some time. With the other starter, Ron Bartell, already out with a broken shoulder blade, the Raiders could ill afford to sustain another injury at cornerback.

Pat Lee started in place of Bartell and was benched early after struggling to guard Brian Hartline. Hanson didn't fare much better and Lee was forced back into the game after Spencer left.

No other cornerbacks on the roster have played a defensive snap this season, although safety Michael Huff could move to cornerback this week.

"We're going to look at the personnel that we have," Allen said. "We're going to look if there's anybody out there that we feel like can help us. So that's definitely a position that we got to look at and see where we're at and see if there's anything we need to do."

Right tackle Khalif Barnes left in the second quarter with a groin injury and will also likely miss time. Willie Smith replaced him and is expected to get the start Sunday.

Oakland needs better offensive line play in order to get McFadden and the running game going. The Raiders are averaging a league-low 2.0 yards per carry and are ahead of only Tennessee in total yards rushing with 68 in two games. They have been unable to break anything with the running game, with the longest carry going for just 11 yards despite having a game-breaking back in McFadden.

"It's real close to popping wide open," left tackle Jared Veldheer said. "I have a ton of confidence that we'll work at the things we need to get it on track this week."

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4855939387606381137.post-57944527747048637642012-09-18T07:33:00.001-07:002012-09-18T07:33:04.418-07:00How Warriors' Barnes Can Make Rookie Impact - Bleacher Report

As we close in on a month until the start of the 2012-13 NBA season, Warriors fans have to be excited to officially check out their new players.

While it will be nice to see Andrew Bogut wearing Warriors colors, fans will no doubt be most excited to see No. 7 draft pick Harrison Barnes take the floor. Barnes is a long, athletic small forward who should be able to immediately step in and help Golden State. While he showed some flaws at North Carolina, there is no doubt that he is ready for the NBA.

This article will go through exactly where Harrison Barnes could make his impact on the Golden State Warriors during his rookie year.

Defensive Presence

Streeter Lecka/Getty Images

Plain and simple, the Warriors need help on defense.

They got Andrew Bogut last season, which should finally give them the defensive presence inside that they have been looking for. Still, defense is where Harrison Barnes could make his impact the greatest.

Last season, Golden State gave up over 101 points per gameâ"good for third worst in the NBA. They clearly needed help and neither Stephen Curry or Klay Thompson seem up for the challenge.

Very few people are expecting Barnes to become a lockdown defender, but he has the length and athleticism to play solid defense, and that is something that Golden State desperately needs.

Warriors fans shouldn't expect too much out of Barnes defensively after watching their team for the last few years. Still, he will make Golden State better on that end of the floor which is all we can ask for.

Rebounding

Grant Halverson/Getty Images

Another area that Golden State struggled in last year was rebounding.

They were the third worst team in rebounds per game, and were out rebounded by league worst 6.65 per game.

Once again, the addition of Andrew Bogut will help since he is a threat to grab double-digit boards if healthy. Still, the team will need help from other positions, and Barnes should be the first on the list of players to step up.

Barnes' rebounding in college wasn't great, averaging 5.5 per game last year playing next to Tyler Zeller and John Henson. At the very least, his rebounds per game should stay at around five, but don't be surprised if they go higher than that.

Like defense, Barnes won't have to be great to make a serious impact on this part of the game. The Warriors are a terrible rebounding team, and his arrival should be a step towards fixing that.

Spreading the Floor

Chris Trotman/Getty Images

Finally, a strength for the Warriors. This is a team stacked with good shooters.

They have Brandon Rush, who shot 45.2 percent from behind the arc last year, to go along with Klay Thompson, who shot 41.4 percent and Stephen Curry, who shot 45.5 percent.

That doesn't even include David Lee, who can step out and hit the mid-range jump shot with ease.

The point is, the Warriors can shoot the ball.

Still, the addition of Barnes will allow Golden State to keep their spacing, which allows Andrew Bogut and David Lee room to work inside. It also allows Curry more room to create looks for the offense.

Barnes was a good three-point shooter last year, hitting on almost 36 percent of his attempts. This year, however, I'd look for him to improve on that number as he sees more and more open looks.

Another Consistent Scoring Threat

Harry How/Getty Images

Harrison Barnes may have trouble creating his own shot at times, but there is no doubt that he is a capable scorer.

Barnes scored 17.1 points per game last season while shooting 44 percent from the field.

While I'd look for his scoring numbers to dip a little, they will still likely hover between 13 and 15 points per game.

He has the makings of a deadly shooter, both from mid-range and beyond the arc. Playing with Curry, Thompson and David Lee should give Harrison plenty of open looks that he is more than capable of knocking down.

The Warriors could use another consistent scorer after finishing 12th in the league in scoring last season. Harrison Barnes could easily be that guy, and will likely make his presence known on the offensive end this coming season.

Begin Slideshow
Keep Reading

Flag

Props (0)

This article is a duplicateoffensiveplagiarized
What is the duplicate article?

Why is this article offensive?

Where is this article plagiarized from?

Why is this article poorly edited?
Flag This Article

Golden State Warriors: Like this team?

Most Hated Players in the NBA

How New Warriors Should Be Used

Why Barnes Can Win the Rookie of the Year

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4855939387606381137.post-56656520170572277292012-09-18T05:33:00.001-07:002012-09-18T05:33:26.729-07:00Why L.A. Lakers Are Model Franchise for Other NBA Teams with True Franchise ... - Bleacher Report

The Los Angeles Lakers are the epitome of perpetual title contention; they are the embodiment of getting it right.

Year in and year out, the Lakers are in the thick of a championship race. After all, this is a team that hit "rock bottom" because they fell in sequence to the eventual NBA champion Dallas Mavericks in 2011. As disappointing a display as that was, the fact that such an exit was unacceptable is a true testament to the model franchise that is Los Angeles.

Why are we compelled to watch the Lakers on a daily basis? Is it the flair that comes with playing in a big market? Is it the smorgasbord of stars that have traipsed their way in and out of Tinseltown? Are we just naturally drawn to the shiny gold jerseys?

While each of the former may play a part in heightening the intrigue Los Angeles has to offer, the fact is we want to watch this teamâ"even if we're not Lakers fansâ"because every season, without fail, this is an entity worth watching.

And that's something plenty of other organizations should take notice of, especially those that boast a perennial franchise cornerstone who draws in the masses and means nearly as much to his team as Kobe Bryant does to the Lakers.

Do you think it's easy to put a well-polished product on the floor year after year? It's not, regardless of how talented your primary foundation may be. Just ask the teams that have wound up bidding adieu to their beloved superstars because they couldn't actualize such a concept.

Jeff Gross/Getty Images

Mitch Kupchak, though, has managed to keep the Lakers more than relevant for nearly 15 years. He's managed to navigate the mine field that comes with boasting a superstar like Bryant. He's appeased Kobe's ego when necessary and put him in his rightful place when the situation called for it.

Again, do you think that is easy? Not even the Mavericks can attest to how difficult it is. Sure, they've reached the postseason for 12 consecutive years, but only a handful of those appearancesâ"five to be exactâ"can be considered deep playoff runs.

The Lakers, though? They've appeared in fewer than 10 playoff games just three times in the past 12 years. That's nothing short of spectacular, and the quintessential example of a finely tuned, well-oiled machine.

And while much of the Lakers' success can be attributed to Bryant's own accolades, there's no excuse for overlooking the resourcefulness of this franchise as whole.

Los Angeles' résumé reads like a book of consistent success, yet the winning formula and highly touted reputation hasn't come easy. There have been numerous occasions where the Lakers were forced to reshuffle, restructure and concoct a new blueprint for success.

Unlike most teams, though, the word "rebuild" was never uttered within the confines of the Staples Center. Kupchak and company have a penchant for switching gears on the fly, without compromising the team's ability to remain competitive.

Remember when the Lakers were forced to move on from Shaquille O'Neal in 2004? Even with a player in tow like Bryant, such a move would have crippled most franchises.

Not the Lakers. They persevered, received a passable package in exchange for Shaq and remained a part of the championship conversation, embarking on a back-to-back title quest merely four seasons later.

And how about just a few months ago, when Los Angeles was handed its second-straight second-round exit in the playoffs? This team was done, right?

Except that the Lakers weren't. Kupchak, once again, refused to waste Bryant's presence. He went out and landed Steve Nash for peanuts, Dwight Howard for an entrée and Antawn Jamison and Jodie Meeks for table scraps.

Now, yet again, the Lakers are unquestionable title contenders and Kupchak, for what seems like the upteenth time, has not only salvaged, but capitalized off a deteriorating team dynamic.

As tumultuous of a ride as Kobe's tenure in Hollywood has been, most stars would give their dominant shooting hand for the type of crafty loyalty he has been sheltered by his entire career.

Don't you think Nowitzki would have welcomed the opportunity for the Mavericks to be a perpetual title threat, as opposed to an on-again, off-again contender? Wasn't one of the driving forces behind Howard's dysfunctional departure from the Magic the franchise's inability to put a championship-worthy product on the hardwood consistently? Did Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James and Chris Paul not spurn their previous organization's for the same reason?

Let's face it, had the Cavaliers been more Kupchak-like and Laker-esque in assembling and re-assembling a supporting cast around James, The Chosen One would still be in Cleveland. Had the Magic exuded the ability to seamlessly restructure and usher out unfavorable contracts like the Lakers, Howard wouldn't be donning purple and gold right now. And had the Suns constructively coped in the post Amar'e Stoudemire era, Nash wouldn't be set to take the floor for one of their arch nemesis'.

For these teams that have witnessed, developed and loved a superstar only to lose them to greener pastures, they must pick up on the precedent the Lakers have set the next time around. And for the teams who currently have star-studded athletes in their possession, they must begin to emulate everything Kupchak and the Lakers have come to represent.

Which NBA team has been the most successful in consistently building around their primary superstar?

Which NBA team has been the most successful in consistently building around their primary superstar?

Boston Celtics

Dallas Mavericks

Los Angeles Lakers

Miami Heat

Oklahoma City Thunder

Other

Total votes: 37

Because, first and foremost, the NBA is a business, one where player loyalty exists for only so long without proper reciprocity. Kevin Garnett could only stand so much in Minnesota and even Kevin Durant, the poster-boy for genuine intentions, wouldn't devote himself to a Thunder team that wasn't committed to winning every year.

Not all teams understand thatâ"Kupchak and the Lakers do. They've done everything necessary to ensure Bryant's endeavors are anything but empty, his efforts anything but futile and his talent anything but wasted.

So, instead of chastising Los Angeles out of envy, let us pay homage to the team that has gotten it right and continues to get it right. Let us revel in a proven recipe for success of a franchise attempting to consistently build around one star.

Because when it comes to winning, roster upkeep and appeasing and utilizing the talents of a superstar, the end has to justify the means.

And, somewhat ironically, the Lakers have proven the best way to do that is by ensuring there is no actual end in sight.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4855939387606381137.post-47594929809145949812012-09-18T03:33:00.001-07:002012-09-18T03:33:24.690-07:00Comparing 2012-13 Golden State Warriors to Last Year's Version - Bleacher Report

The 2012-13 Golden State Warriors look like an exciting, dynamic team that doesnât resemble last yearâs version. The frontcourt has finally solidified and the perimeter is covered with young, accurate shooters.

GM Bob Myers did an excellent job during his first summer at the helm. He acquired guard Jarrett Jack from New Orleans in a surprising move to back up often-injured Stephen Curry, and he hit a home run drafting Harrison Barnes. He also signed free-agent PF Carl Landry.

Going into last year, the biggest question was about new coach Mark Jackson. Monta Ellis was the playmaker and leader of the team, while Dubs fans hadnât yet figured out David Lee. Klay Thompson brought the hope and excitement after being picked 11th in the draft.

Are the Dubs a better team as they start the 2012-13 season? Are they deeper in some areas, but weaker in others? Did the Andrew Bogut trade really put them in a better position going forward?

Let us take a look at this year's opening day roster:

2011-12 Point Guard: Stephen Curry

Stephen Curry spent a lot of time on the bench with injuries.
Jason O. - isportsweb.com

The USC Trojans football team dropped their first game of the season to Stanford in Palo Alto on Saturday, marking the first time USC has lost four straight to the Cardinal.

Stanford Cardinal fans rushed the field after the football team beat the USC Trojans, 21-14, on Saturday night.

It wasnât quite as shocking a loss as many have claimed; Stanford was ranked, after all, and theyâve had USCâs number the last few seasons. Losing to a ranked opponent by one touchdown on the road isnât really an upset; it is, however, a blow to USCâs national title hopes and to Matt Barkleyâs Heisman campaign.

So what went wrong?

The Stanford defense manhandled USCâs offensive line.

The Trojans were without fifth-year senior center Khaled Holmes, who was injured in the game against Syracuse. USC desperately needed him; redshirt freshman Cyrus Hobbi, who got the start at center, just couldnât stand up to Stanford.

Having Holmes wouldâve helped, but heâs not the entire solution. When he was on the field against Syracuse, Barkley still didnât have time to throw downfield.

On Saturday, Hobbi struggled as the Cardinal repeatedly drove at the middle of the line, but he wasnât the only weak link.

Redshirt freshman Aundrey Walker, who replaced Matt Kalil at left tackle, has his predecessorâs size but not his experience and couldnât protect the quarterback, and right guard John Martinez also let one of Stanfordâs defenders get right to Barkley.

Last season, USC surrendered just eight sacks. On Saturday, Barkley was dropped five times. Thereâs always going to be some letdown when a fourth-overall NFL draft pick is replaced by a redshirt freshman, but the line play was such a huge concern that head coach Lane Kiffin is considering starting true freshman Max Tuerk over Walker.

During preseason, Kiffin praised Tuerk as the freshman who was most ready to play; he got a lot of reps during camp when Walker was injured. Walker didnât have any career starts prior to this season either, so there wonât be a huge drop in experience if Tuerk gets a shot this week.

USC had no rushing attack.

Curtis McNeal and Silas Redd combined for 54 yards on 20 carries, but the Trojans netted just 26 rushing yards in the game, gaining less than a yard per carry (26 yards on 28 attempts). Stanford, by contrast, had an almost perfectly balanced offense, with 202 yards on the ground and 215 in the air.

Both McNeal and Redd missed chunks of the game with mystery ailments, and fortunately, both were able to return, but they didnât do much. A lot of their struggles, of course, are related to the problems on the O-line, but Reddâs lost fumble â" his second in three games â" didnât help.

Matt Barkley had a lousy game.

Kiffin said afterward that Barkleyâs two interceptions (on consecutive passes, wrapped around a Stanford INT) were âprobably two of his worst decisionsâ in the last few seasons. Barkley had a rough night but itâs hard to blame him. Who wouldnât be in a hurry to get rid of the ball and get out of the way of the brutal Cardinal defense?

Barkley had two interceptions but no touchdowns, for the first time since November 2010, and he was just 20 of 41 for 254 yards, although those stats would undoubtedly have been better if he hadnât been beaten to a pulp all game. He should probably consider himself lucky that the biggest injuries were to his pride (Stanford is the only Pac-12 team he hasnât beaten) and his Heisman hopes.

They couldnât convert on third down.

USC converted just one of their 13 third downs in the game. One. Stanford and head coach David Shaw just out-coached and out-maneuvered the Trojans. The Cardinal almost always seemed to know what was coming and how to defend it. USC, on the other hand, didnât seem prepared even when it was obvious what Stanford was going to do.

They couldnât kick a field goal.

Couldnât, or wouldnât? With kicker Andre Heidari out, the Trojans have relied on freshman walk-on Alex Wood for PAT attempts but havenât tested his field goal kicking in a game. Kiffin said if theyâd had Heidari on Saturday, they wouldâve kicked a 30-yarder when they had the chance. They went for it on fourth down instead, and while the coach didnât say why Wood didnât the kick, USC clearly doesnât have much confidence in his leg.

Stepfan Taylor.

The Cardinal running back needed just five rushing yards to hit the 3,000 mark, but he didnât stop there. He had 27 carries (more than all of USCâs rushers combined) for 153 yards and a touchdown, on a 59-yard run. He also caught three passes for 60 yards and another score. Taylor accounted for more than half of Stanfordâs total offense; like Toby Gerhart back in 2009, the Trojans just couldnât figure out how to stop him.

About Justine Hendricks
It's almost football season! However, he completed only half of his 48 throws and misfired badly on numerous passes. Mike Goodson did a nice job turning a short reception into a 64-yard touchdown. Tight end Brandon Myers caught all six passes thrown his way for 86 yards. Grade: B

Run offense

Darren McFadden and Goodson combined for 16 yards on 12 carries, as the Raiders struggled running the ball for the second straight game. The inability to establish the run forced the Raiders into a pass-heavy attack, which played into the Dolphins' hands. So far, the zone-blocking scheme has been slow to yield results. Grade: F

Pass defense

The Raiders pressured rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill on a consistent basis. Yet, they sacked him only once and allowed him to complete 60 percent of his passes. Cornerback Pat Lee struggled mightily in place of injured regular Ron Bartell. MLB Rolando McClain got beat for a touchdown. Grade: D+

Run defense

Atrocious. Four missed tackles enabled Dolphins back Reggie Bush to turn a third-and-1 play
into a 23-yard, game-altering touchdown. Ten plays later, Bush scampered 65 yards for a game-clinching score. Overall, the Dolphins managed 263 yards and four touchdowns rushing, at an average of 6.1 yards. Grade: F
Special teams

Phillip Adams had three nice punt returns, though two were wiped out by penalties. He also made three questionable decisions fielding punts inside the Raiders' 10-yard line. Sebastian Janikowski converted both his field-goal attempts. Shane Lechler averaged 46.9 yards on his nine punts. Punt coverage was spotty. Grade: C

Coaching

Coach Dennis Allen summed up things best: He and his assistants didn't do a good enough job of having their players prepared to beat a Dolphins team that lost all four of its exhibition games and its regular-season opener. "Probably two of his worst decisions in our three years together on back-to-back plays."

At the time, USC led 14-7. The Trojans didn't score again the rest of the game.

Kiffin noted that Barkley had thrown just one interception in nine quarters of football until that point. He also said Barkley took a lot of shots from Stanford defenders throughout the game and indicated he was the victim of poor offensive line play.

"He's pretty beat up, mentally and physically," Kiffin said of Barkley, who appeared on the verge of tears in a brief postgame press conference following the loss.

A senior, four-year starter and preseason Heisman favorite, Barkley will now end his college career without beating Stanford -- unless the teams match up again in the Pac-12 championship game in November and USC wins.

Kiffin said his quarterback was broken up over that fact.

"You can imagine the disappointment of a 22-year-old, when you come back and all that you put into it and the game goes the way that it did and having never beat those guys," Kiffin said. "(But) he'll be fine. Asked how long he could be out, Spencer said, "We'll see tomorrow."

If Spencer can't play, the Raiders will have lost each of their starting cornerbacks before the third game of the season. Ron Bartell is on the short-term injured reserve list with a broken shoulder blade and can't return until late October.

The Raiders finished the game with Pat Lee and Joselio Hanson at cornerback. Phillip Adams and Coye Francies are in reserve, but neither played a snap on defense against Miami. Chmidi Chekwa, a fourth-round pick in 2011, is available on the practice squad.

General manager Reggie McKenzie and the personnel department were presumably busy lining up visits Tuesday from out-of-work cornerbacks.

One option would have free safety Michael Huff lining up as a cornerback in some packages. Huff was told at
the end of last season by the previous staff he would be moving to cornerback, a plan that was scrapped by the new regime.
Matt Giordano then would get additional snaps at free safety.

"We're going to look at the personnel that we have," Allen said. "We're going to look if there's anybody out there that we feel like can help us."

Miami's Brian Hartline caught nine passes for 111 yards against Lee and Hanson after never having more than five receptions in a game. It's an understatement to say the next three weeks will be a challenge to a team with a depleted situation at cornerback.

The Pittsburgh Steelers come to town with quarterback Ben Roethlisberger throwing to Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown. Next up is Denver, with all the problems Peyton Manning presents. Then the Raiders travel to Atlanta, where Matt Ryan has two explosive talents in Julio Jones and Roddy White.

Barnes was replaced by Willie Smith for the final 40 snaps against Miami. Smith arrived as a waiver claim from the Washington Redskins when the Raiders finalized their 53-man roster.

"I thought he did some good things," Allen said. "We'll continue to work with him. I feel like he's somebody that we can work with that can get better."

Allen took the unusual step of having the entire team watch film together instead of breaking up into position groups, delaying the start of his weekly news conference by more than two hours.

"I just felt like it was a good thing for us to get together and look at it as a team and see where we've got to make improvements so we don't let these things happen again," Allen said.

Hanson said it was the first time in his seven-year career he'd watched film with the entire team.

"Any player across the league would say it was awkward at first. ... I think it was good, holding everyone accountable for what they do on the field," Hanson said.

Said left tackle Jared Veldheer: "There's a sense of urgency -- all the guys are depending on me to make this block or execute this play. I need to do it. How do I fix it? That kind of mentality."

The Raiders' average drive start is at the 19.5 yard line -- the worst in the NFL.

The heat and humidity appeared to wear down the Oakland defense in the second half, when it gave up 190 of Miami's 263 rushing yards. Allen said it was "a factor but not an excuse."

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4855939387606381137.post-30010122362396095932012-09-17T19:33:00.001-07:002012-09-17T19:33:25.527-07:00USC Falls to No. 13 in AP Poll - ESPN

Updated: September 16, 2012, 10:58 PM ET
By Pedro Moura | ESPNLosAngeles.com

USC Falls to No. 13 in AP Poll

USC Falls to No. 13 in AP Poll

LOS ANGELES -- USC Trojans coach Lane Kiffin was puzzled by two "really poor decisions" made by Trojans quarterback Matt Barkley in the second quarter of USC's 21-14 road loss to Stanford on Saturday.

More On USC

For more news and notes on the Trojans, check out ESPNLosAngeles.com's blog. Blog

And Kiffin went as far to call them some of the worst decisions he's ever seen Barkley make.

On a third down with less than two minutes to play in the first half of Saturday's game, Barkley threw into traffic and was intercepted by the Cardinal's Jordan Richards.

Then, after USC linebacker Dion Bailey picked off the ensuing throw from Stanford's Josh Nunes, Barkley forced a throw downfield and had his second straight pass intercepted.

"(That was) really unusual by Matt," Kiffin said in his Sunday evening conference call with reporters.
